I was going to Humber College in Toronto and learning about music theory. They taught us how jazz composers would use extended notes beyond the usual major scale. Like #9, #11, b13 notes. I liked this idea since now you could make a melody that was a little odd sounding. So I applied this idea to the guitar chords, then to the synth melody as well. We'd been playing this song live for a while and Chris Bell did some really nice guitar riffs during the synth solo. In the lyrics I quote a line from Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run", which I thought was quite funny, but no one ever seemed to notice. I guess people don't listen to the words.
We had first recorded this song with Lurch in early 1993 at Joel's rehearsal space and that version was too fast. So when we recorded it at Friendly Pirate Studio we had Joel play to a click track. If I recall correctly, him and I recorded the drums and bass at the same time. Then Jenn, Chris, and Kurtis over-dubbed their parts separately.
This song was played at every single MELT gig. It was also the lead off track on the Manchester "In The City" CD, and a typo, with it being called "Let's Get It Wrong".
